What are folks' thoughts on pitchers pitching and making infield throws at the same practice? Volume parameters for either? Frequency?

Not sure why pitchers are pitching at practice. Sometimes pitchers pitch to start a drill (stolen base defense, bunt defense, etc.) but we aren't talking about a large number of throws.

In the summer there is no need for actual practice pitching. A lot of times pitchers don't even go to their private coaches during the summer season (not enough time).

If you can't get your throws in during the winter sometimes pitchers would pitch during practice.

Are you asking about actually pitching to start PFP drills? Or as Gunner says, pitching to start a team defense drill? Or are you asking that if a pitcher does a side session during practice, does that have an affect on how much overhand throwing they should or should not do during that same practice?

The pitcher is a very key defensive position. There are many different types of throws they may need to make. Recommend that gets worked into their routine.

If you just want to be a pitcher and not play anywhere that's fine and you can stay out of infield drills. If you want to pitch and play something else you need to practice there too. If you arm is tired you need to let the coaches know so they can alleviate some of it.

To paraphrase @RADcatcher, "Sometimes the best fielding instruction to a pitcher is to get out of the way." In college, my DD's job on infield popups was to walk, quickly, into foul territory.

On high level teams, the corners and catchers are incredibly quick.

This video of Mike Candrea working with the Olympic team always make me smile. Jenny Finch's technique is awful...but, if you can throw 70MPH with a great rise ball, who cares? Lisa Fernandez is better...but that is Lisa.

Yes, pitching a side session in practice and taking part in infield throwing drills. Say their secondary position is 2nd base.

Fine point. On younger teams, at least, your pitchers probably play more other positions than they do pitcher. It's a grind, trying to get pitching practice in but also keep up with your other positions (and hitting).
