I don't know anything about Sandusky's wife. Generally, the wife of a sex abuser is subservient. She is totally dependent upon the husband. She believes that she cannot survive without her husband. So, she ignores a lot of obvious clues and accepts whatever the husband says. (I can tell you stories much, much worse than this case.)
The wife is generally not very interested in sex, and is somewhat "happy" that the husband doesn't bother her. In some cases, the wife becomes that way after being married. Other times, the wife was chosen because she doesn't like sex. (Having a wife is a great cover, and also allows access to children.)
There are generally three kinds of abuser. The first kind is the kind like the Elizabeth Smart kidnapper. The second is the kind like Sandusky. The third is family abuser. The most prevalent is family sex abuse. The next most common are people like Sandusky. The least common, although they get the most press coverage, are like the kidnapper in the Elizabeth Smart case.
My guess is that Sandusky probably tried seducing lots of children, but most shunned his advances or complained. He then would "laugh it off" as a misunderstanding. I suspect Sandusky has used the "I shower with the kids. Big deal! Back when I was young, we always showered together" argument many times.
If you read the grand jury transcript, Sandusky gradually increased the amount of physical contact between himself and the victims. It starts as harmless touching, then hugging, then back rubs, etc. He acclimates the child to abuse. So, when the "more serious" stuff starts, the child is ready. (Sometimes an abuser shows porn in order to get the child to believe the conduct is normal.)
It is a numbers game for abusers like Sandusky. If the abuser tries seducing enough kids and knows when to stop with those kids that aren't interested, then the child abuser finally finds one or two kids who are curious. Then, the abuser uses a combination of guilt, pleasure, and rewards to keep the child.
Of course, the child doesn't stay a child long. At some point, the child is beyond the age of interest of the abuser, and then the abuser has to find another victim.
