They're not really a FLEX at that point if they're playing offense for the DP, so they don't have to play defense to stay in the game.

Yeah, they do. Anytime the player assigned to the Flex position is not engaged in the game when his/her team is on defense, that person has left the game and is entitled to one re-entry.

They better play defense, 'cause you're down to nine players now and I believe all players will need to be in the field of play.

OP says they also had an AP, so they went from 11 down to 10.

Go back and read again - this is under USSSA rules and they say otherwise. smh
