They're not really a FLEX at that point if they're playing offense for the DP, so they don't have to play defense to stay in the game.

Yeah, they do. Anytime the player assigned to the Flex position is not engaged in the game when his/her team is on defense, that person has left the game and is entitled to one re-entry.

Go back and read again - this is under USSSA rules and they say otherwise. smh
