Riseball...thanks for your response and all of the excellent info you have on here. I do have her use a taped ball most times, I'll make sure I always use it from now on. When you say she may have got her fingers on the "outside of the ball"...does that mean instead of releasing the ball 6-12 she would be more 5-11 or 4-10?

If she is doing it right on her FB you should see 1-7 not 6-12. 6-12 means she is releasing right behind the ball. With practice she should be able to get to 2-8 and 10-4 allowing her to get a good amount of tail in or out.

...out of nowhere a beautiful curve appeared on one pitch..

If the axes have a smooth side and a rough side, the ball will sometimes move in a way you wouldn't expect from the spin.

Pobguy (Dr. Alan Nathan--POB stands for Physics of Baseball) explains it in the Hardball Times article, Dissecting a Mystery Pitch. For some reason, DFP won't let me link to the article from this post. But you can google "Dissecting a Mystery Pitch" and find it easily.

An example of this effect in a major league game is at about 3min22s of this video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=t-3jnOIJg4k&t=1s&list=PL9DD771BEEDB40464&index=16 .

I have no idea if this happened with your dd.
