I'm curious as to what some of you would consider "fast" , "above average", "average", and slow for most 10U pitchers?

I know speed isn't everything, but I'd like to hear from those with a lot of experience out there what they would consider in the above category.

My daughter is 9. Her max from full pitch is 44. She stays above 40 in practices where we clock her but still pitches a little slower facing batters, 38 to 40.

The 2 other pitchers on our team (also 06 girls) pitch low to mid 40s.

I'm sure mid to high 40s is fairly common in higher level 05 teams. We've played some 05 a teams that I'm pretty sure the pitcher broke 50 or was very close. The 05 teams we've played who are Bs were slower and less accurate than our 06 girls though.

The fastest we saw in So Cal 10U TB was low 50's. From 35', that gets REALLY hard for most girls to connect with. Generally, those pitchers will dominate a game if they can keep it in the strike zone. I heard that there were a couple of girls at PGF Nats throwing mid-50's, but I haven't seen it for myself.

Part of what determines "average" is going to vary depending on the level of play, so I changed my descriptions a bit. Some generalizations (IMO)...

Fast = 50+
Good = 45-ish
Decent = 40-ish
Slow = sub-40 (you will probably see a lot of this is rec ball)

Make sure you understand there is a difference between "maximum speed" and "cruising speed". Maximum speed is usually "come out of your cleats" in practice, while "cruising speed" is what a pitcher throws in games to live batters. There is usually a 2-4 MPH difference, unless radar grandpa is behind the radar gun at practice. Also be aware that some girls mature early, so do not be discouraged if other pitchers are throwing faster than your DD. Work on mechanics and the speed will come!

10U Cruising speeds
Phenom = 48+
Fast = 45+
Average = 42+
Decent = 40+
Slow = 38-

What I saw last summer Northern California 10u-B for cruising speed:
Fast= 47+
Above Average = 45-47
Average= 41-44
Slow = sub-40

Saw one girl consistently throwing 48/49. About half the teams had someone throwing 46/47. To be competitive, you had to have someone at least throwing 43/44.

Most of the ones cruising faster than 45 were usually taller and stronger than average.

Agreed. However, it's shocking how effective a sub-40 pitcher can be against a team used to seeing 45+ - LOTS of weak ground balls. Slow pitchers with location control can be extremely valuable in relief.

Been on both sides of a girl who only could pitch 35-37, but had good control. With a good defense behind her its definitely worth pitching her once through the line-up as a relief pitcher or starter. Good hitters at 10u (and sometimes 12u) have trouble adjusting to slow pitching when they are used to mid-40's or faster.

I have seen a lot of really good 16U players have a hard time adjusting to slow pitching....
