The problem is that this drill will not be tolerated by the HS softball coaching staff that this player will run into here in a couple months. In rebuilding her hitting mechanics to help her become a better hitter, we want to take the path of least resistance, which will be to learn to swing without the hand action in the above clip. It will also need to be without a stride (head coach announced last season, "There will be no strides."). This player, a pitcher, will take enough flack for her IR pitching style. She doesn't want to have to take more flack with her hitting style.

Swingbuilder's bat-throwing drill has already helped her swing immensely in how it gets her bat path correct.

It is a shame that this must be the thought process. But I understand exactly where you are coming from.

Our HS coach does this drill but then won't let them tip the bat while in the box... Doesn't make sense to me.

Not here.

Wish you good luck. I for one would not be part of teaching a swing with 'Inferior mechanics'.:p There is softball after high school for some players and 'this' might not make this possible. JMHO.
Added: Hit the 'crap out of the ball' at the first batting practice ,flip the bat and walk away...

drill

Swingbuilder also recommends doing the "whip" drill while performing the "happy Gilmore" drill.

Do you have a link or clip of him talking about doing this whip drill while performing the happy Gilmore? I'd be interested in looking at it.
There really wasn't much of a discussion. .. he recommended it to me to help DD after looking at a video of her. He prefers a step behind when doing the drill and then doing the whip of the bat. Then do it normally trying to achieve the early whip with a full swing.

And by EVERYTHING else, what exactly do you mean? I'm asking because I see a lot more going on than just top hand swivel.
If you are quoting SB then that's 1 thing but if YOU are using the word EVERYTHING else on your own then I would like to hear how you interpret that.
Before you answer look at the clip and see what His body is doing before He activates His hands....

I'm not quoting SB. As I said, it's how I understand it. Okay, maybe "EVERYTHING" is a bit extreme. The focus here...

...is on the action of the hands (again, as I understand it). When using this drill with my DDs, it's about whipping the barrel with the hands and the action of top hand swivel.

I like this drill much better:

Hands 'turning the barrel to the ball'. Extension is not some thing that is taught in a 'arm extension drill'. Extension is a result of the swing. The arms will get 'extended', because of what the hitter does upstream. 'Whip' the barrel, 'turn the barrel to the ball' righttttttttttttt now.
This kid pictured is getting extended through contact, and more closely resembles the way I teach batting. When my kids perform the bat throwing drill we are literally launching the bat towards centerfield as far as we can. And not specifically looking for the helicopter effect. There are too many people just looking for specific words or phrases that they disagree with. This forum is a great tool for learning many variations of different perspectives.

Two extremes.

which is the best corner to teach?

The top drill is a good drill for pitch lower in the zone, and I believe a bit shorter barrel path, but will cause problems with pitches high in the zone.

The second, Tewks will cover the higher pitches well, but will require the batter to have More Tilt, to adjust the swing plane for the lower pitch, not abad thing for training.
