In our hitting practices last night and tonight, I incorporated the reverse hand drill. I haven't don't it until now because I thought it was silly to reverse the top hand. OH MY GOSH!!!! This drill did more to get my batters to understand the swing should be than any other drill we've ever done. I even had them occasionally switch to reverse hand while I was pitching to them from 20 feet in front behind a screen. The players it helped the most were those who have a chronic problem up swooping under the ball.

I will definitely be using this reverse hand drill in every batting practice!

I had my computer set up on a table off to the side just outside the batting cage and showed the girls your clip of Casey doing the drill just so they didn't think I was loony.

What I really like is that it gets the girls to understand the Nike swing-path I'm shooting for. It was particularly effective with the girls who had very circular swings where the barrel was in OR UNDER the path of the ball only over the length of roughly 8-10 inches. While some my like that type of swing, I do not. I want the sweet-spot to travel on the path of the pitch like a Nike symbol. This reverse hand action really gets them to see what I'm talking about.

I have one player who just couldn't get away from chipping the ball (bat still travelling down at contact). I told her that if I see her getting two strikes with her regular grip swing, I might instruct her to reverse her upper hand for the last strike. Strange, huh.

As I see it, in pitching practice while I'm pitching from behind a net out in front of them, when I see them swooping under the ball (which I think is quite common around here), I'm going to tell them to reverse the upper hand for a few pitches to reiterate what the path should be, then go back to the normal grip and try to swing that way.

rdbass, Thanks for posting it! I wish she were wearing a white glove on that top hand so that the girls could better see the reversed hand. In my opinion, this drill somewhat forces the bat path that I believe is ideal, and it does so automatically. It was very refreshing to see the girls buy into it as they continued to use it, even off and on while I pitched to them.

Doug. Try doing it with the rear hip in a pre stretched position. Rotate the rear thigh bone and leg forward, so the rear foot is facing about toward wear a second basemen would stand. The hips should still face home plate. So picture the ball on top of the rear thigh bone turned forward within the hip socket that surrounds it.
NOW have her do the reverse hand drill...throw her a light front toss and DUCK!
