Reminds me of the 'red bat demo'...

Used that drill with a kid last night with the notion of introducing 'short hands'.

Had her do the throwing drill tonight.. and then take about 20 reps, WOW. Short hands, no shirt... what an improvement. Wish I seen this one earlier in the season. Great drill!..

Teacherman: “When I am in my command drill, right here, I’ve already got this laser on this ball … and I just turn.”

Basically, before he swings, he's identified 'direction'. His swing takes place with 'direction' in mind.

Between the 3-sec to 9-sec mark Teacherman reviews a movement prior to his swing ... an alignment type move. From this it appears that he advocates that there is a move prior to his swing that aligns his swing with 'direction'.

That's what I gathered from this as well. Direction needs to be determined early in the process. IMO the term "launch" muddies the waters. "Before launch", "After launch"... Ignoring the term launch, direction must occur before the barrel achieves significant acceleration. Once it is accelerating, all that is left is adjustments...

Missing his BACK...Swinging with his BACK....

Great video to show how difficult the process can be and too many want to quit when it doesn't come easy. Then, of course they have to come up with something different or "easier" to rebuke Rich's info.

Learning to rotate the forearms correctly to TTB is step one. If you can't do that swinging with your back makes no sense.

The term 'launch' shouldn't muddy the process.

When you throw an object maximum speed is generally at 'release'.

I tell my hitters that I want them to 'release' into & through impact.

The word 'launch' as used by 1CA is simply 'release' ... and if the goal is to hit the ball at maximum barrel speed, then you'll want to be in the process of 'releasing' ... or 'launching'.

Personally I use the word 'release' with my hitters. However I can readily identify with 1CA's use of 'launch'.

As for 'direction' ... it is essential IMO. I'll pitch to my hitters and ask that they attempt to identify 'inside' or 'outside' as quickly as possible (no bat involved in this drill). The goal is for them to identify the ball as being 'inside' or 'outside' within the first third of the distance the ball travels. How you use your eyes helps. A relaxed open focus can allow a hitter to back-plane and more quickly identify inside/outside. The notion is to leave this drill with the message of being responsible for quickly identifying the incoming pitch location in terms of 'inside' or 'outside'.

Excellent point and message.

Not only does the hitter need to keep performing 'experiments under the hood' in their search to get there, but the hitting instructor needs to be astute enough to guess at what portion is being missed. Simply instructing the forearms and rear leg will not teach the torso movement to all hitters. In this case we had an adult with a fairly reasonable sense of body awareness, and yet he was missing a critical portion. Just imagine how difficult the process is when the student does not have a reasonable sense of body awareness.
