And the fake Bustos doing what you teach on the video/DVD that you help make. Get to the lag position and then release the barrel to the ball:

These swings aren't doing what I promote....and wouldn't hit the catchers head......pleaaaasseee:

Or you can do what straightleg teaches pushing the hands forward first, getting to the lag position then releasing the bat to the ball.

If this is the swing you are looking to be taught to your DD PM straightleg.. He gives lesson and Gatorade's. I think the Gatorade is worth more.
Again, I asked you to leave me alone but, noooooo you felt the need to pick on me.

Looks to me like he is pulling the barrel downwards as well. That's what confuses me about the clips posted where an instructor demonstrates turning the barrel. It seems really over exaggerated and then you look at MLB players and I don't see the same action.

Very carefully watch the location of his hands in relationship to his right (rear) shoulder. The hands may be getting a little closer to the ground, but only because the positioning of his shoulders are changing. Lateral pelvic tilt...

You are seeing it right. It should scare you.

Stick to taking advice from guys who actually work with students and have a history of success.

I'm not here to join the war and pick a side... I'm just saying that I am not seeing the hitters emulate what some of the instructors are teaching. If I show my DD a video of some of these instructors and what they are asking their students to do (I posted a video and time in the video of the instruction earlier in the thread), she will literally try to do that in her swing..

RDBass is right in what he is saying that Manny does turn the barrel .... but it does not seem all forearms and hands to me, it seems like the elbow folding under the pinched scap plays a big part in turning that barrel.

In the end I want to instruct my DD and give her the best advice, not join this pissing contest

Yes I had my daughter try that and I was told she's not using her hands/forearms to turn the barrel, instead she was using her elbow.. so I am not sure anymore. I asked her to rotate the triangle, I am very wary now of using any elbow cues.

One thing that is missing in a lot of this analysis of HI swings, IMO, is what are they trying to do in these swings that we are trying to emulate and what it feels like when they do it correctly. When I swing, and granted I was never Manny and never will be, I never think about my elbow and instead think about how the bat feels in my hands. In a swing where I am getting a good barrel turn with early bat speed, I feel a tremendous amount of pressure in my hands and forearms. If I attempt to push the bat I can feel the difference. Just my 2 cents...

If you work the barrel between the hands your elbow will "slot" it has no choice....but you can also "slot" your elbow and NOT work your hands but rather arm-drag the barrel -- the typical path to DBSF, drop barrel swing flat most young hitters' number one problem. Looking at too much slow-mo video isn't always the best path to understanding or finding good cues to teach kids, my two cents.

Where to y'all believe is the ideal position of the hands at launch?

I know there's some style in that - higher or lower, nearer the armpit or back further. Some of that style can be seen in the angle of the lead arm at launch (ie, some nearly barred, some 45-degree angle), not to mention higher or lower.

But what's ideal for turning the barrel, IYO?

I'm going with 45ish and bat pointed somewhere between CF and LF (righty), behind armpit and just above shoulder but its not an exact science and should feel natural, the bigger and stronger I think more wiggle room you have to be tighter.

more points of reference I think Miggy get away with a little closer because of strength (and has one of the most compact elite swings I've seen) and Griff was relaxed BP swing so it does not look as aggressive but they are all still fairly consistent even though styles vary. I think if you use Miggy as the tightest/compact and Lauren and Griff as most extended you have a pretty good range with most player being somewhere in between, Harper being pretty high. Anyway while there is variance I still think the basics are there. and for my two cents the teacherman swing demonstration is over exaggerated but again I think it is to give you a feeling and not to duplicate exactly
