I've never really paid too much attention to this stat so I need a little edumacatin'.

If a baserunner gets on base due to an E, FC, BB or HBP and they score, can it be scored an earned run? does the term "earned run" apply only to how they score regardless of how they got on base?

pitcher hits a batter, she eventually gets around the bases and scores on a hit - is that an earned run?

thanks!

Unearned runs are those that score because of errors and/or passed balls, including E/PB that put runners on and those that help score them once they get on.

Simplest guide is to reconstruct the inning with perfect fielding (no errors or passed balls). Those that would've scored despite errors and passed balls are earned. Those that scored because of errors and passed balls are unearned.

I do try to stay away for this stat but it is nice to know how it is calculated.

Most DD's Teams shift around a lot in the field, it will drive you nuts keeping track of earned runs.

Remember too it needs to be pushed out to 7 innings. If she gives up 1 earned run in the first she has a 7.0 Era.

Thank you! My thought was if someone gets on base and it is scored a hit, when they score it is an earned run unless they score due to an error
