Edy, can u post a pic with the 4 finger grip?

Thanks!

Sure! But I think a clip will work even better

RB 4 finger grip.jpg

To create that spring action you have to force your index and middle to separate. As my hands are big, the middle finger will rest on the other seam, but I believe a smaller hand will tend to have the middle finger right in between the seams.
Anyway, all fingers will work to put spin on the ball by twisting it at release, but the index is the last finger to lose contact with the ball.
In the clip 80% of the spin was created by the "spring" action. I barely twisted the other fingers...

I also use a similar grip for curveballs, with a different angle at release

Please let me know if I can help with anything else.

Last week, FFS was trying to stop people from using the terms "fastball" and "drop ball". This week, he wants people to stop using the term "rise ball".

Again, the data from the 2011 CWS simply destroys his "theories". You can see the data at the right shows pitchers getting the ball to end up 10 to 15 inches above where the ball should be if it were thrown with zero spin. Some of these kids were doing something to get the ball to move.

of course, what you want is high speed video showing the seams.

This one shows a kid throwing "the spinner" with perfect backspin...

JJ...do you have the full recording of the UCLA v. Michigan game on May 29? The intro to the show had slow motion of Megan Betsa throwing a rise with about 1-7 rotation.

The rise is a very difficult pitch to throw. Few pitchers have good breaking stuff. The stuff about 12YOA kids have a great *anything* is just crap.

I looked for this on Watch ESPN but the replay does not show a clip int he beginning. I'll peruse the rest of it and see if one pops up.

Clearing up a possible misconception about what good Riseball spin looks like is what I am trying to do by showing the actual spin of very effective riseballs at the top D1 level and above. Clips of riseball pitches that do not show the spin are plentiful. You can watch any game and see them 50 times. Seeing the actual spin of these pitches allows people to see the correlation so they know if the spin axis is correct for a good Riseball and can start working on other things like spin rate and release angle
If you have a description, opinion, clip of what you consider good RB spin then please share.

Folks have frequently commented here that they consider this (below) to be a good riseball spin.

Sluggers, your dishonesty is again on display. I asked you before to point to evidence of this false claim of yours. You failed to do so. Why? Because there are no such posts in which I suggested the term "drop ball" not be used.

Mothgirl, the CU seemed to be the goto pitch for some many pitchers in the Series. I was stunned on how many CUs UCLA's pitcher threw. Become the master of that pitch before advancing to the next.
