Does this type of workload increase risk of injury?

There is no doubt. It is clear the people running this sport across this country either do not care about the health of the young girls playing it, or are to ignorant to know any better. This has been studied and papers written by orthopedic doctors on the subject, stating there should be limits imposed based on age. Yet it has not happened.

Of course there can be overuse, but from what I've seen they put similar pitch limits for softball as baseball, and they really shouldn't.

I can routinely throw a few hundred pitches in BP underhand and I feel nothing after (other than some soreness in my surgically repaired hip). I could definitely not do that throwing overhand BP.

There's also this: Thousands of baseball pitchers of all ages have serious arm injuries every year. There are very few arm injuries for girls who pitch properly. They happen, and that doesn't mean a 12 year old should be throwing 250 pitches in a single day, but I do think we need to think about softball pitch counts much differently than we do with baseball.

Here is two papers one written by one of the most renowned orthopedic surgeons in the country, another written by three orthopedic specialists. Yet we ignore them and put or daughters health in Bob the plumber or Mike the mechanic that says I throw x number of pitches under hand and practice every week and it never hurt me. it amazes me at the ignorance around this sport, when the only reason people don’t care is that there are no multimillion $$ contracts if there was the people with the money would ensure these kids were not ruined at the age of 12.

The best way to prevent injury is to not play. Thanks doc. And those aren't "papers" (peer reviewed articles). It amazes me the ignorance...

The ignorance absolutely amazes I agree. When you have people on here that seem to know more about this subject than very accomplished orthopedic surgeons.

It's a bit high, yes. But if it's just a one-time thing, she'll be fine. I wouldn't want this to be the norm, however.

My 12U DD pitched 90 on Saturday and none on Sunday. I'm perfectly fine with that. Had we gotten to the championship game she would have pitched that and added 60-70 for Sunday.
