When did your DD first throw 60 mph?

As a side note. This past weekend, I gunned a bunch of 16u and 18u pitchers at a lower level tournament in central CA (DD 14u team was 1 of 2 teams playing up in 16u division) and the highest reading was 58mph (with a range from 47mph - 58mph).

Those are far more typical speeds than the 60's people claim. IME those are pretty close to average HS speeds too.

DD hit 60 in 9th grade, and now she is a senior and tops out @ 65. She is 5'10" so she is a couple of inches taller than most, which helps. I am hoping that getting into a college workout program will give her the extra leg drive to get into the upper 60s, but I don't think she will get to 70...

My DD is going up to 12U this fall so she'll be slowing down for a little while. :(

SnotBubbles, not quite the right take on the PGF thread. Far from every kid throwing in the 50's but not that uncommon for the better teams there to have one or more throwing in the 50's.

Don't know anything about the 10U at PGF Nationals, but I'm sure there are plenty in the 50's. My DD's team finished top 10 in the 14U Premier division and it's a requirement to throw consistently at 60 to be a pitcher on her team. Her cruising at 59-60 sometimes isn't enough at that level

I would bet the farm she cruises in the 66-68mph range and bumps 70mph once she gets into the grind. Know of a pitcher 2 inches shorter that did the same thing. :)

This is a great thread! I think most are wondering where their dd fits in on this spectrum. Nice to hear honest responses from parents that don't have anything to prove or have dd's that are competing for circle time Btw mine (freshman) cruises around 55 and tops out around 57. Sounds like she's fitting in where she should. Can't wait for that "60" though!!

I've seen some wild fluctuations between radar guns. I've heard most coaches use the pocket radar, which seems to show the slowest velocity. I time at the plate, which is what the batter sees. I can normally guesstimate within 2-3mph using with just my eye.

Damn, you guys are good. Several pitchers in the Big 12 wouldn't make your team.

dd has been clocked at 55. not sure if it was a good day or not. i tend to go by results and hard hit balls. she is 16 and has not given up a home run. and the catcher has a huge affect on the results. throwing hard and straight with out any off speed pitch will not give good results.

When my DD was 14, one of the other dads on my DD's 14U team installed police radar and radios in squad cars for a living. He gave me a real police radar gun to use one day. She was hitting 60 at 14 years old. By the time she hit her HS junior year she was hitting 62-63. She was at mid 60's when she was in college. DD is 5'10" with a large frame.
