Hi,

My son is playing in his first year of t-ball and I've just got a quick question about when a ball is foul.

If the ball is hit and lands fair but then rolls over the foul line is it fair or foul?

Cheers

Unless, it is hit to the outfield. Then, if it lands fair - it is a fair ball, even if it rolls foul. Also, if the ball hits the line it is fair, unless it rolls foul. :)

Fair or foul depends on where it is when it lands, and where it rolls foul. If it is in front of the base (home plate side), it doesn't matter where it lands, it is where it is picked up or touched. It can land in fair or foul territory either one, but if it is touched foul, it is foul. If it is touched fair, it is fair. Any part of the ball, touching any part of the line is considered fair.

The base is a dividing line between fair and foul. If the ball lands in fair territory beyond the 1st or 3rd base bag, It is fair even if it rolls into foul territory. If it lands foul it is foul.

The tricky part is when the ball rolls toward the bag. If it touches any part of the bag, it is fair because the bag is entirely in fair territory. If it is fair when it rolls past the bag, it is fair. If it is foul when it passes the bag, it is foul. If it is bouncing sometimes it is hard to tell and you have to look for the home plate umpires call.

a foul ball is abatted ball that, A settles or is touched on or overfoul territory between home and first base,or between home and third base; or B bounds past first base or third base on or over foul territory;or C first falls to the ground or is touched on or over foul territory beyond first or third base; or D while on or over foul territory, touches the person of a umpire,a player or any object foriegn to the natural ground or E while over foul territory, a runner interferes with a defenseive player attempting to field a batted ball; or F touches the batteror the bat in the batters hands a second time while the batter is within the batters box; or G goes directly to any part of the catchers body or equipment and is caught by another fielder.

Also know that home plate is fair, just because a ball would hit it, does not make it foul.

(You are going to be the best educated parent in tee ball.)

Depending on what rules your league plays by, there may also be a foul line drawn a couple ft in front of home plate. If the ball doesn't go past that line they will call it foul. I agree with Amy's statement too! :)
