The problem with teams that spend a lot of time on situational awareness and not enough time on fundamentals (especially at 14U) is that you can't rely on all the parents to work on fundamentals with their kids. Parents don't know what they don't know. How many players coming up from 12U have the correct footwork, glove work, arm slot to play their position? Maybe it's different in So Cal, but here in the North East, most of our players at 14U have a long way to go, and the parents don't spend enough time learning the fundamentals themselves to teach their kids. In So Cal, with the nice weather, you will have plenty of opportunities to play a ton of games and scrimmages where the players will develop situational awareness. As a coach, focus on the fundamentals in practice.
