Pole vaulting is another case of momentum transfer. The vaulter runs very fast, and then puts the pole into a hole that brings the pole to a sudden stop. All of that momentum has to go somewhere, so the pole bends and changes the forward momentum to upward momentum.

The problem is most people don't actually know the mechanics of pole vaulting. Your analogy is much, much better.

Great photos for comparison Slugger. I am dealing with the same with my 9 year old (so we have a little while to figure it out). Also note the direction of the plant knee and the drag knee and how that impacts the drag foot which kind of anchors the backside as the top side and strowing shoulder just keep traveling. I think it is all connected.
