Well, do not use USSSA rankings, my DD's 16U team is ranked in the top 10 in points and power in NY, watching them play, not sure why they ranked that high. (definitely a good team, but not top 10)

Take team rankings with a grain of salt - some teams never compete in the events which rank teams (eg. Triple Crown, PGF, etc). However, if they do compete in those events and have a good ranking they are typically legit. Just don’t discount teams that don’t, as they might play those teams at that level, but just not in those specific events.

Sometimes you can also look at results of some of the big tournaments to see who some of the top teams are. Not always reliable, but if you see some of the same teams always winning that might help. Triple crown has their power pool, IDT tournament in Colorado usually has good teams, it is a smaller invite I believe. Look at the PGF web site. they have teams listed for the berths and returning invites. Those are usually a top team from the org.

USSSA power rankings compare teams within the same age group AND class. For example, if your DD's team is a 16B, only games against other 16Bs are considered. Ranks are determined by a formula that uses a combination of team record and the record of teams played. Yeah, take it with a grain of salt, but it provides a reasonable gauge of the performance of a team relative to a particular group.

The USSSA points is a function of how many events a team has played, what kind of events they were, and how well they did. Points are awarded for entry and how a team finished. Certain events may award two or more times the number of points ordinarily awarded. Seedings for many tournaments are determined by USSSA points ranking.

I'd agree that it provides ''reasonable'' direction on how the teams are, but it's a simplistic formula. It's not nearly as good as more sophisticated models that people might recognize, like Sagarin or Massey.

In North Carolina the past few years, there was a website that ranked every team in the state with an excellent ratings system. They didn't rank them this year, perhaps because of Covid.

That system used all scores, not just within age and class, because a good model can handle that. USSSA's model, being too reliant on W-L record, doesn't know how to reward a B team that beats a 5-5 Class A team. It just thinks, 'They were 5-5, so they must be mediocre.'

None of this is meant to disagree with what you're saying, really. USSSA's rankings have some value. Just trying to say that there are much better methods to ranking teams than what you see by USSSA or any of these associations.

Is best "real" ranking systems that does the best. Teams win points based on the tournaments they play. More points are assigned to big Nationals. IDT, Sparkler/Fireworks, USA Nationals, PGF, TCS Nationals etc. Lower points are awarded for tourney like States and regional Nationals. They do a 3 year rolling average. No subjectivity.

Interesting 3 year rolling average.
Better than the year at a glimpse!
Perhaps can see coaches consistancy better. Since rosters can vary yearly.
