Local hs started this experiment years ago. In fact, the 19’s and 20’s are the first graduates that had the “opportunity“ to participate. The hs coach is a home builder and had resources. They built a really nice quad, cages, concession stand, all first rate. They built an indoor hitting facility and hit all winter. The summer teams played local. It was exact how I would execute it if I was going to do it. I’ll add that overall, he benefitted softball in our region.

Yet the feeder teams stunk. The hs team was mediocre, maybe worse than it was before. It did not improve their Hs program.

The question is ”why”.

I can only guess but here is what I saw, looking in from the outside.

Lack of true competition for playing time/positions. If lil Suzy was a ss at 11 years old, she was a ss forevermore.

Parents manipulating the situation for their own benefit.

The teams were built around filling in the empty spaces of volleyball and basketball. If there was some stupid school summer sports activity they would cancel practice, etc.

Really nice players that played competitive travel not getting playing time because they weren't on the low level hs feeder team. (This could be a function of poor player evaluation. The longer I’m around fastpitch the more I think coaches at most levels are terrible at player evaluation.) Part of this may be because Player A has lower stats playing against good competitive teams and Player B that hit 9 home runs one weekend against the worst pitching in the area. Player B can’t hit hs pitching but they have convinced themselves she is a great hitter..... etc

Last, it kicked politics through the roof. The parents and players never got a break from each other. Instead of going out and making new friends from all over the place they lived in the vacuum of local sports. There was no reason to work hard on your game. Some kids were going to play the position they played when they were 10 and hit in the same old spot no matter what. After all Daddy A sold seed corn to Coach A, Grandpa B donated a Gator, Mom C played college softball (for a year before washing out of a D3) and Player A’s brother is a great football player. And player B HAS to play when she isn’t too busy with volleyball.

We live in an adjoining town and kids from our town somewhat benefitted from their teams as they needed warm bodies to fill out the teams. Some moved on after a year or two on these train wreck teams- they saw a benefit. The ones that stayed didn’t benefit. It was a stagnant environment.

I’m really against it. We never were involved in it but a lot of our friends and their daughters were. Total dead end.

A few local high schools have created TB teams and have put the word out in the community that if their DD wants to play for their local high school team that they HAVE TO play for the created TB team.

Is this fact or just something someone said while they were in the stands? or just a rumor based on a kid's parent that didn't get any playing time? Or is it an assumption because these coaches have a TB team?

If anyone is considering this, the next time you are at a school sports function, look around.

Look at the cliques and alliances.

Do you really want to spend all summer with these people after you spend all fall, winter and spring with them?

Last post then I’ll bow out!

Thats what happened on the team I posted about above. They said it and then they did it.

It was really surprising to me. I can’t believe any coach would not prefer to win more games. They played lesser players and sat better players according to where they played summer ball.

My buddies dd was a LH power hitter that was a very nice player. Great base runner. Great personality. She played on a Tb team that won a lot. I would play that kid every inning on any team I ever was around. Should have been a four year starter. They sat her.

Same buddy has a kid in 8th grade on a REALLY good team that has won a PGF qualifier and a Top Gun tournament in the last two weekends. I don’t know much about he as a player but i know the coach and if you don’t contribute on that team you are gone, gone, GONE. I’m not sure she will play hs ball.

This kid would not have developed into a good player practicing “sometimes” on the feeder team and playing low level travel. Yet she very well may not play hs ball.

And the result of some of these farm team situations pre h.s.
is the best learning tool for some families to then
GO TO A DIFFERENT HIGH SCHOOL
Because good or bad situations get exposed early on.
( understand that is not an option in certain area's. )
( recognize h.s. academics should be priority in decision)

People do things for different reasons.
That includes Coaches.

Just wondering if you all had experienced anything like this. A few local high schools have created TB teams and have put the word out in the community that if their DD wants to play for their local high school team that they HAVE TO play for the created TB team. They are using TB as a farm system for the local high schools. Have you all every heard of something like this?

I mean, I get it....you want to coach these girls before HS and see what they are capable of. However, many of these teams are not very good, typically low B and C class teams. My DD's 12u team has a few girls that could be affected by this but the general feeling seems to be that they would rather be on a more competitive team and face better competition than be on a lower team. Also, if they don't make the HS team then they are fine simply playing travel.

I would think as a HS coach that you would want to put the best 9 players on the field regardless of what TB team they play for. If that means that the better players played for a different TB team then so be it. I think it's a bit crazy that HS coaches would threaten to not take an A class player on their team because they did not play for their farm system team. Just my thoughts. What do you think? Luckily my DD is not affected.

Are these "feeder" teams high school age teams? Missouri has limits on high school coaches coaching their players in the summer because of this scenario.

I could understand the high school coach wanting to start and coach a younger team (maybe 12u) made up of girls in the area. It would allow them to ensure that girls are playing and receiving quality instruction at a young age and allow the coaches to see what they have coming up. With that said, the coach shouldn't hold anything against players who choose to compete on a higher level team.

In terms of has this happened, I can't say because my DD's team is a 12u team. What I can state as fact is that 2 girls on my daughter's team have had their parents approached by high school coaches stating that if they did not play for XYZ TB team that they would not play high school ball.

No, these teams are 10u and 12u teams. Again, I can see what the coaches are trying to do but I disagree with the methods. If I were a HS coach, I would keep a close eye on the local talent and learn from that rather than mandating that these girls HAVE to play for them or else.

I live in a major metro area. I've heard that players are preferentially treated based on their Travel Org, with playing for the local Travel Org helping playing time in HS. I have no firsthand experience, tho. Luckily, DD plays for one of the three main schools in the area but the coach (former D1 and Pro player) wants to compete and puts the best kids she can find on the field.

My daughter's HS team probably has FOUR players who are going to play in college, and all four could end up playing D1. If anyone pulled this stunt with our school, the end result would be those four players would quit playing HS ball. How many HS coaches are going to let their best four players walk away from the team?

But, then again, we're in GA where we play HS ball in the Fall (really mid-August through October).
