A few years ago when DD was 11 she was playing on a 13u summer team and it was HOT! She was catching and I noticed that she was really dogging it. i was not going to have any of that so I confronted her after the game and told her that if she expects to succeed in life she has to suck it up and toughen up and well you know the routine. So after the game I take her to our local rec field and start working her out in the heat. She complains that she is tired, hot, dizzy, thirsty and that her heart is pounding! I think OK sure whatever we will be done for today but tommorrow we will start again! turns out that she had to go for a volleyball physical the next day ...and did not pass due to racing heartbeat! had to get her to a specialist and it turned out to be a thyroid issue, she had it treated and now is in tip top condition and catches for her varsity team as a freshman!

I thank god that her little heart didnt explode when i was pushing her like a stupid jerk.
I will never forget how lucky i am to still have her.

We had a player injured in an auto accident this year. She got hit from the side on the rear driver's side. After all the x-rays and exams they said she had bruised her upper back pretty bad. Her stepdad/coach wanted her to keep working. She's a catcher and a power hitter. While working hitting drills it was obvious she was in a fair amount of pain so I wouldn't let her swing any.

Her stepdad after regular practice gets her up swinging. Power swinging like she's used to. I really felt uneasy about it but what could I say. She went on to play in the next couple of playoff games with no negative health results.

But I still was uncomfortable with what went down so I called my DD, who has her doctorate in Physical Therapy, to get a supporting opinion. She told me that as long as there was no chance of further injury there should be no problem. But the real kicker was when she reminded me that I let her play with a meniscus tear and partial ACL tear back when she was playing. She was also a tough catcher.

I had forgotten that. But both of them are the kind that won't tell you when they're hurting. Those are the kind you have to watch the closest.
