Holding bat with thumb open??

I have a lot of girls who instead of closing their thumb around the bat leave it open and laying along the handle. I can see that maybe somewhere they were told to do this so they can't get a death grip on the bat, but I feel like it could maybe result in a power loss at contact?

As I've recently discovered in the Power thread, the hands play no part in applying extra force once the ball contacts the bat.
