Since when is someone making a rule for the overall safety of players a bad guy? If I was in charge of ASA or PGF I probably would consider making it mandatory for certain age groups to start wearing facemasks.

I'm saying if there were a game rule in place it would remove the stigma of those wearing it and girls that probably should be wearing masks would wear them and reduce the risk of serious injury. Not everyone is as talented as those posters DD's who know how to pitch around big batters and field a ball hit back at them.

The game is changing. Bats are hotter. Players are stronger. 30-40 years ago I don't even think girls used helmets in softball. I'm sure a couple of players got hit in the head and then someone made helmets mandatory. I don't think its that crazy for that rule for facemasks to be put into place.

Is there something not understood about a parent being responsible their child? There should be no need for a rule and the ONLY reason there would be is because the ADULTS are not doing their job of protecting their children.

There is no rule requiring a player to wear a glove, but you would have a cow if your daughter went out to catch without one and DEMAND she put one on. So, why is this different?

The reason there are all these ridiculous rules is because of the stupidity of the parents and coaches who shirked their responsibility as an adult. And people wonder how this country became a socialist nation while no one was looking.

Let the parents parent and let the players make their own decisions as well.

Really? Let the players make their own decisions? That is why this thread is so damn long, the parent DOESN'T parent if they are letting the player make the decision. Hey, if your 14yo decides she wants to become a mommy is that okay, after all, it is her decision.

I have a player this year that has had 2 family members arrested from her home so far this season. Do you honestly think that what serves as parents are giving good and rational thought to her safety? They're worried about bail money, not her face. They're worried that if she moves out, their welfare/ drug allotment will shrink. They're worried that softball will interfere with her ability to come get them from the bar. Her safety? Get real.

While that is an unfortunate situation for this girl, however it isn't a call to arms to institute a rule or a law that involves everyone.

If the situation is as bad as you post, then if the rule was mandated or a law enacted, the parents of this girl would likely not purchase a mask since that would interfere with the beer and drug money. Then she would have to quit playing. Not the outcome you probably want.

However, the same option exists now that would exist then in a mandated situation. Maybe the team could purchase a mask for her to borrow or someone could purchase one and give it to her outright.

Exactly. Protect the children.

What price are you willing to pay to protect others as you see fit, and what price are you willing to pay to have yours protected as others see fit?

Lol. We aren't talking about civil liberties being violated here. We are talking about safety and youth fastpitch softball players wearing facemasks so maybe some girl like the one in the original post and countless other examples of players getting hurt maybe doesn't happen again while playing a game. It is a game after all. Who wouldn't want a rule to protect the children? Even the MLB athletes didn't adopt batting helmets right away. I'm guessing old school macho thinking kept it out but eventually it was mandated and now every player wears one. Please name a single MLB player that feels violated about being mandated to wear a helmet.

Who wouldn't want a rule to protect the children? After all it is all about protecting the children. So I take it you have no problem with society protecting your DD from you? In most states they have rules and laws to do just that. More than likely your daughter is or will be protected by making sure she has access to "family planning" services at no cost and without your knowledge. Understand that your reaction to her seeking these services may not be what is considered appropriate, so society has decided to make the parenting decisions for you. After all it is only to protect your child in case you make a bad decision. I mean it isn't like they are infringing on your civil liberties or anything.

BTW - MLB did not mandate helmets until the vast majority of players were already wearing them for many years. Facemasks are the exception not the norm. It took MLB a good 50 years to mandate the use of helmets.

"However, though unlike in the NHL in the same era, helmets were widely accepted, it was not until December 1970[4] that Major League Baseball actually enforced strictly mandatory use of the batting helmet for all batters. Veteran players, however, were given the option of choosing to wear a helmet or not, as they were grandfathered into the rule. The last Major League player who did not wear a helmet while batting was Bob Montgomery, who last played for the Boston Red Sox in 1979."

While I'm not sure how facemasks rules in youth fastpitch softball are related to these confidentiality laws already in place by some state governments, if my below 18 DD felt like she needed to seek services like that without my knowledge then that is because I as a parent was not doing my job correctly or she just felt she didn't need my help with that.

And yes. Baseball evolved. Players got better, faster, stronger, smarter. If most were already wearing it why even mandate it? To protect the few knuckleheads left who don't realize helmets are there to protect them from injury.
