I dont think that is a huge problem. It gives them a chance to hit a ton of balls at various speeds throughout the winter time. Also , still a good tool for just basic BP

One thing the original poster mentioned was her not being able to hit the machine or live pitching. That sounds like a timing issue. The way machines are often used there is no mechanism for learning to time the pitch. Even with front soft toss there is an element that can be timed. So the batter learns timing.

The batter in this case needs to understand that they are ready to swing at a pitch ONLY when they are at toe touch (timing). You MUST be at toe touch to swing. Time it so that you are at toe touch slightly before the ball gets there. Coming to toe touch is best done with a stride; but at least raise the foot and put it back down softly, heel up. Heel plants at start of swing.
