It really depends what you want out of it. On a budget or for just a basic website that have a bit of an ''amateurish'' look, self-design or using free tools like godaddy works fine.

However, it is easier today to get something that looks nice for a good price using Wordpress with a free or paid template or sites like wix or my favorite free website builder: weebly.com (looks actually pretty good).

However, if you truly want a website that will do what it is supposed to do - rank in teh search engines, market your services, bring visitors and convert visitors into customers - in other words commercial purposes, a professionally designed website is worth it.

Actually depending of what type of what website you want - $1400 for a professionally design is a decent price. Normal professionally designed, customized, and developed can be in the $1500-3000 range. There is a lot of things and customization that can also be done on the back end that might be worth it.

You are getting tons of good advice. The template-based sites at places like GoDaddy can be difficult to manage once you get past what the initial template gives you.

I really like these which give you tools to really manage the site on an ongoing basis in a very WYSIWYG way: Weebly (Marc mentioned) and SnapPages. Check them out and good luck.
