MTR has good advice. First time around just use straight nine in lineup. Really, it isnt a bad way to go. DP/Flex was originally intended to just get another player in the game.

Always refer to the batting lineup

Anytime you substitute someone from the bench into the game, you place them in a spot in the batting lineup and remove the player they are replacing. If that player returns to the game, they MUST go back in the same spot of the lineup and replace whoever is there currently. So if Suzy is batting in the third spot, and Mary replaces her, then Suzy can return to the third spot only. Same with Mary. Neither can ever bat in any other spot for that game.

You can substitute for a substitute. It is the same idea. Mary can replace Suzy. Abby can replace Mary. Either Mary or Suzy can replace Abby, etc. But once in the game, they must bat in that spot of the lineup. Hope that makes sense.

Make these substitutions when they come into the game, either on defense or offense.

A courtesy runner can only be someone who has not been in the game in any capacity, defense or offense. In other words, they have never been written into the batting lineup (Spots 1 - 9)

Remember, the batting lineup only defines who is playing in the game and where they are in the batting order. As long as the correct nine are in the game, you can move them around defensively as you see fit.

Can a team with 9 players bat 9, but only play 8 in the field? We played a team that had a lineup of 9. One girl became ill. They benched her from their defense, but allowed her to hit to avoid the automatic out. And they used a runner for her that wasn't their last out..

There are no provisions in the rules for a player to drop out of the defensive lineup and only play offense. If the team drops to 8 players due to injury or illness, they must take the out when that players position comes up in the batting order. Also, no actual rule set would allow for a runner when the team only has 9 players as there are no available substitutes.

Believe i can do this but want to double check! Mary in lineup and reaches 1st. I pinch run beth for mary. Next inning put Mary back in for beth. Two innings later Mary gets on first. I pinch run Beth again and Mary is out for good. Question is it legal to use beth as that pinch runner and put her into game? thanks in advance!

When you substitute a player into the game, they assume that position in the lineup and that is now the only spot in the lineup they can occupy. As long as Beth has not already been used as a substitute, what you are asking is completely legal. But, as I said, that is now the only spot in the lineup Beth can occupy.

You may be confusing courtesy runners with pinch runners. Courtesy runners may only be used for the pitcher and catcher and it has to be a player who has not yet been in the game. It does not count as a substitution and the courtesy runner remains an eligible substitute for any position you may wish to play them in. But, they cannot be used as a sub in the same half inning they were used as a courtesy runner.
