As a former golf course superintendent I can tell you that roots grow when the turf is dormant. You did the right thing by doing it now, and going 3" helps also.

most of our athletic fields were build on fill......stumps and rocks and such

We have a 2 field complex that was built on an old trash landfill...looks nice. When you stand to the side you can
see its a bit wavy now though, but still nice.

Will have a better idea by the end of the week, warm temps should bring the green, but the main patch took and did not sink in
