We had a pinch hitter going up to bat. On the first pitch (ball), runner on first stole second. Coach forgot to report sub, but does so after this first pitch; does this make the substitution legal; does failure to report negate the runner advancing if the other team would have protested? Would batter have been out, or only after they completed their at bat?

Not illegal - just unannounced. Illegal would be a player who is not eligible to enter the game.

Offense reported sub prior to the defense raising the issue. Makes no difference when reported as long as it was before the opposing team brought attention to it with the umpire. This is nothing.

Agree that this situation as outlined is nothing. However...

Had the DEFENSE first raised the issue DURING the AB, wouldn't it be treated the same as batting out of order / wrong batter? In that situation, wouldn't the "correct" batter assume the count, but the offense then announce the substitution, and the PH then continue with the at-bat?

If the unannounced PH had COMPLETED the AB and reached base, and the issue was raised by the defense prior to the start of the next AB, wouldn't that result in an "out" declared on the correct batter?

If appealed by the defense during the at bat, the PH is simply entered into the game and continue the at bat. If she completes the at bat and then it is appealed by the defense it is going to depend on the rule set. USSSA and NFHS simply enter the player into the lineup as long as they are a legal sub. In USA the unreported sub would be called out and entered into the game.

And if that was the scenario offered, I would have answered the same as Comp
