This happened in a JV game today. I don't know which specific ruleset they use. The other team put a new rightfielder in to start the inning and did not announce it. The second batter hit a blooper to rightcenter and tried to stretch it into a double. The RF fielded it and threw the batter/runner out at second. Our coach argued that since the RF did not enter the game properly, the play should not have counted. The umps ruled the play stood.

It seems like there should be some penalty for not announcing a sub, otherwise what is the point of a rule requiring subs to be announced? What's the correct ruling?

If it was a JV game it is most likely nfhs rules. No penalty as long as it was a legal sub. Player is entered into the game and coach gets a warning. If it we're USA rules the offended coach would get the choice of result of play or a do over, unannounced sub is now in the game.

In this situation it is actually a team warning and they get 1 for that offense. If the coach does it again, both the coach and the player are restricted to the bench for the remainder of the game.

More for the batting order than the defense.

I've done this before, just didn't realize that I didn't report it to the ump. A warning was giving to me, and the next offense I would have been kicked out of the tourney. I haven't done it since!!! lesson learn!!!

Not really....the ruling would be the same if the unreported substitute was batting and reached base in NFHS rules. First offense, team warning, player is now in the game. Next offense, head coach and player are restricted to the bench for the remainder of the game.

In USA SB, If the unreported sub batted and reached base and was appealed by the defense prior to the next pitch, the unreported sub would be in the game, but called out and any other base runners returned to the base occupied at the time of the pitch.

There is a difference between an unreported sub and an illegal sub. An unreported sub would be a legal sub other than not being reported. An illegal sub is a player that violates the substitution rule...examples are a player that has already used her re-entry and left the game, a player that bats in a different spot in the batting order than where she started, etc....
