In my experience that's really normal in 10U. Seems pretty normal in 12U so far too. Both of the pitchers on our team tend to need an inning or at least a couple of batters to really get going. They're both really good, experienced pitchers. Once not too long ago in the first inning DD walked the bases loaded (I think one was a single actually). The next 3 were strike outs, no runs scored. Sometimes I wonder if she does this on purpose to get to play cat and mouse. No, not really. But it seems like it happens a good bit, walk a batter and give up a hit early on then settle in and get the outs.

Easy, she hasn’t pitched enough!!

At 10u practically all the best pitchers were accurate enough to throw a strike zone sized pattern. Move the target to the edge and you just cut in half your chances of hitting the strike zone!!!

We learned to call games based on how accurate the pitcher was for that day. Most of the time we could move the catcher 1/4 of the way to the corners and get strikes and then some days we had to leave it down the pipe, change speeds, and let them be effectively wild.

Keep in mind that if she is a flame thrower the batters are more likely to wait for the walk. At that age getting help from the batter was a bigger part of the game and can make a pitcher look much better or worse.

Focus on hitting corners for called strikes and the adjustment when she is missing and those crazy 1st innings will eventually disappear.

This is her problem:

my daughter is on her second year of pitching in 10u she throws pretty hard for her age.

My DD games stats for an inning of work when she was 10YOA: 4 walks, 4 strikeouts (a dropped third), and 4 earned runs.

Simulate game situations. The last 20 minutes of every pitching session work batters. My DD has been doing that for about 3 years. It really works. But you need to put pressure on her. Start with a 1-0 count.. Hold a tight zone.. Place runners on.. Push her.

I have a different theory then other posts, they usally have their best batters in order they want too.

1st inning is the hardest.

Lights, scoreboard, other colored jerseys, spectators, umpires! All while being one of the few brave enough to try to do one of the hardest things in sport!

If you figure out this mystery, perhaps you can tackle why I hit straight down the fairway on one hole, then slice the next one... hook the following one, etc. Why does this happen? Because I don't golf enough to make it consistent. No parent likes to hear that it takes time, everyone wants the quick fix. But it just doesn't work that way. It takes years of games. Practice helps but nothing is the same as actually pitching in a game. It's like how I can hit long and far at the driving range but, I see the WHOLE COURSE when I play a round. Practice is not the same as games. Different pressures are involved. Adrenaline takes over. Pitchers "over throw" trying to pitch harder than they are actually capable, which messes with timing, mechanics and that creates havoc. Have her pitch in as many games as possible. Be a guest pitcher whenever possible. Remind her not to over throw her pitches. Telling her to relax will be a waste of breath. Nerves are nerves, talk to her about her nerves and not over throwing BETWEEN innings when she's not so amped up on the rubber.

Bottom line, it takes time and experience.

Same theme as previously post ....

10U ball is not going over the fence for the most part but top order is going to hit her.

Let them hit it, trust defense. There are 7 other players out there.

DD used to throw it down the throat and way shape or form at this age if she got behind, walks are not good.
