I strongly believe that around 14U and then above a pitch that is 5-7mph slower than the FB (I call an off-speed) is more deadly than the 15mph slower pitch (I call a changeup)

~10 mph slower is what we shoot for on the Change.
"Flip" changes are usually too slow and "hang" more.
DD throws a horseshoe, and it's about perfect.

As I've written before, my DD was a D1 pitcher. She did not have a good change--she rarely threw it during a game. She changed speeds on her drop ball. She could throw either a "fast drop ball" or a "slow drop ball". There was about a 5 MPH difference in speed. She was able to put a lot of spin on the slow drop, so she could start a little higher than her normal drop.

She also varied speeds of her fastball...she would a "one time max" fastball, which could be around 65MPH, and then go down to perhaps 58MPH, and then back up to her usual speed of 62MPH.

It worked well, but it would have been better to have a great changeup.

Total opposite of what DD HS coach wants. I agree with you and DD has proven it this summer. The better you can sell a CU the slower it can be. But without the great sell an offset works better
