Most of DD's coaches over the years have focused on keeping the ball down in the zone in order to induce ground balls (DD is a pitcher). Seems contradictory that a hitter would also want to hit the ball on the ground...

Sounds like most of your DD's coaches over the years have bought into a bit of flawed logic. :)

To a certain extent, I agree with that. My personal preference is to utilize her spin to avoid square contact. She is primarily a north/south pitcher and is relatively successful getting ground balls from her drop and weak popups from her rise. It is when she flattens out that she gets into trouble. When hitting, I much prefer to see her hit line drives gap to gap. She does not have the foot speed to beat out infield grounders.

For my DD the goal is to get on base and that depends on the defense. If she knows they are slow she will lay down a bunt, or soft slap it. She can usually beat the throw.
If they are fast she will try to drive one in the gap, or pop a blooper just past the infield but in front of the outfield.

She is not necessarily a homerun hitter, unless you count the 4 "homeruns" she got off overthrows on bunts this year! LOL!

Line drives are obviously the goal but after that I think it depends on the player.

A fast player that typically hits the ball to the left side I will encourage to hit the top half of the ball for line-drives and grounders avoiding fly-outs. Those types of players will be able to beat out some infield grounders and also be able to take advantage of slight bobbles etc. As you get older those things happen with less frequency but they do still happen.

The slow player, that can't reach on a grounder unless it gets through a gap in the infielders I'll encourage to drive the ball. If they miss I want the ball in the air.

I would have fast players that have proven they cant square up a ball to try and hit little dinkers to the infield.

If a fast player has shown she has some pop Ill keep working on driving the gaps and her speed will turn those doubles into triples.
