So Cal
if you KNOW the kid is doing multiple sports be it travel or otherwise and you TAKE THEM onto the team and once they have paid their dues you then THREATEN to take them off the team because the other sports interfere then YOU ARE A SCUMBAG coach.. plain and simple.. if you dont like your players having a life outside of SB then dont take their money and sign them up for your team... thats not coaching thats being a weasel... we allow too many of these idiots to run teams

A coach told one of our players once she would never be a travel ball player. We took her straight out of rec. In the fall she batted just about zero and rotated through right field. She's got this crazy work ethic, busted her butt, worked her way into lead-off hitter and sharing starting 2B/CF with another player. Wish he could've seen the beautiful in the park homerun she hit yesterday in our last game at our world series. While other parents on our team whined about playing time/positions, her mom told her to work for it. Isn't it funny how working for something works so much better than whining about it?

I remember reading that a coach once told Jennie Finch when she was just a kid that she would never be a championship pitcher. I don't know what these "coaches" are thinking. You really can't even call them coaches.

While it is fun to win, I have found it's better/more rewarding to develop a TEAM. years later when you run into former players (or parents) that light up when they see you at the store or whatever, that's priceless.

Along the way, those bad coaches have taught me what not to do. Sitting on a bucket, yelling across the field at an umpire, arguing a call like the Blue was born yesterday. telling U10 players to knock down any fielders that get in their way when running the bases, restricting players to certain positions, telling a batter what not to do while up at bat at a game, yelling to players " if she does that again, break her leg!", getting ejected from a U10 game and then waiting for the (high school girl) umpire in the parking lot, screaming at young players laced with the F-bomb, setting expectations for players from U10- high school like they are college-level or professional athletes, Yelling at a HS player in a slump to "start hitting like you did last year" during an at bat, but also some basic stuff like how not to run a team (all about DD), etc. I've made some mistakes, but I don't think there is anyone out there that would put me in the "bad coach" category.

this year I'm AC on a new U18 team. we hadn't won a single game all summer until yesterday. they finally gel-ed and were playing like a real team. everyone was pumped! one more tournament next week and while i'm not expecting miracles, they have made me very proud and I look forward to seeing them play next weekend.

One thing I like about our leaque is we have a double elimination tourney at the end.

Our record might not be good but we are better and better as year goes on.

In BB, we could lose 1 game to be in playoffs so it was hard not to try and win every game.

He also told DD's best friend on the team that he was very concerned about her weight and would not start her until she was "more fit". She was 12. Her dad is a huge man who played pro football. She is a strong, healthy kid - body shaming anyone?

Maybe that father should have asked the coach what he meant by that to his face. Bet there would have been plenty
of bumbling over his words.

I'll tell some examples of what happened to me and why I'm not returning to play field hockey in the fall. I know its not softball related but I think its relevant to the thread.

I played as a mid fielder on our field hockey team before and after our school's merger last year. I loved our coach my freshman year pre-merger...but our coach post-merger was horrible. Our coach would tell me in practice and at games how horrible I was, she would tell me I was a glory hog after I scored a game winning goal and my teammates celebrated with me and hugged me. She told me I was worthless after I was trying to take on more of a on field leadership role. She cussed me out while screaming at me when I gave another player an assist on a goal. I was told I was a horrible person and a horrible teammate. And that's some of the crap I took off this toxic teacher and coach. Oh, and I would be dismissive if I didn't say that she tried to FAIL me for gym class so I couldn't play field hockey and hurt my near 4.0 GPA!

Its safe to say starting in late August, I'm looking forward to not running out on the field in a plaid skirt wearing a facemask and carrying a stick to trading it in for a two piece shell and skirt and trading in my stick for a pair of pompoms, running out onto a football field screaming my head off as a cheerleader. Trust me, I've been working my butt off trying to catch up to the other girls in ability when I'm not working on softball. The difference is, my squadmates and coaches see the work I'm putting in and are proud of me to be picking up a sport I haven't done since my days in peewee cheer.

good for you!
that coach is a tool!

I know. That coach was so toxic. She sucked every last bit of fun and love I had for field hockey out of me. I still can't believe she actually tried to fail me for gym class. Safe to say my parents were fuming and went to the district for it. I'm glad I'm now on a fall team where my efforts to get better are actually appreciated and my coaches are actually trying to work with me and help me improve to be a better cheerleader.

I got to see the worst well-intentioned coach ever this past weekend. She was on a bucket, warming up her starting pitcher before the game. The girl had a very nice natural motion (the people on the pitching threads would have been impressed) -- internal rotation, front side interference, all very smooth. Then the coach starts barking at her: square up to the catcher! I want to see your elbow up high! Poor kid.

With regards to the slight detour about competing sports: we have one girl on DD's team that plays competitive travel soccer. She's a terrific softball player and it's a better team when she's there, so I'm always happy when she shows up after a soccer commitment. I know, however, that there are parents whose kids are losing playing time to this girl when they make it to every practice and are there for every inning. I know that makes them upset, and that it's not "fair." But there's nothing fair about the huge amount of athletic talent this kid has, and that's just a fact of life.

There's a lot of talk on DFP about the life lessons our girls take away from softball, and one of the hardest ones is this: you will encounter people in your life who are better than you. Stronger, faster, smarter, better looking. Instead of worrying about whether it's fair, concentrate on being your own best. Level playing fields are rare in softball, and everywhere else.

Please tell me WHY parents allow their kids to play for these bad coaches? If it quacks like a duck, its a duck. Find a well coached team, there are tons of great coaches that treat kids with respect.
