DD used transition glasses for every day and softball until the end of 1st year 10u. It was just okay. I made sure she had wider lenses then her everyday pair to allow for better peripheral. We eventually moved to contacts and sports sunglasses have not looked back. We bought sunglasses that have interchangeable lenses based on weather for about $20 on amazon. As far as care for the eyes and the contacts.... it wasn't an issue.

If you go with sports prescriptions - it gets very expensive for the better kind and the corrective lenses for most are an insert under the sunglasses portion.

For regular and transition glasses - check out Zenni optical. I've used them multiple times with issue and they are really well priced.

Right Here For Now
I've been wearing transition lenses for the past 20+ years. Personally, I love them but I occasionally have to take them off when coming out of the bright sunlight into a low light environment. They take a minute or so to "transition." That said, when my DD was 8, I was using polarized clip-on sunglasses for her. One of the big chain drugstores carries the kind that are spring-loaded with coated "hooks" that hook onto and around the lenses themselves. They won't scratch the lenses and won't come off on their own. Best of all, I think they're still around $10 a pair.
