I don't see that much wrong. She's WAY ahead of the class as a 9u. I think getting her hands activated a little earlier and eliminate the the little pull with the arms at the beginning of the swing, and she would be really close.
Congrats. You've done a great job so far.
You mean like this? Yeah, it'd be a shame to have her resemble Manny Ramirez and Miguel Cabrera. Jess sayin'....and FYI, the 'kid' has played at a pretty high level himself. Below is a clip of him hitting the longest home run in an international competition for team USA as a 14u.
I think she's doing a pretty good job with rear side resistance, or she wouldn't end up in the reverse C shape she does at finish. I agree she could coil as she moves out a little better, but total concentration on bottom half is not going to fix her top half issue. JMO.
The inner thighs have to scissor together. She has to learn how to do this. I think early on while they are still learning, it's best to work quite a bit without a bat so that the lower body can be their sole focus. The broomstick drill would work having her finish with the thighs scissored...
Not sure I'd want to throw Yeager's ideas on the lower body and how/when rotation occurs out there as gospel. Every swing clip from students of his that I've seen have all been very much shift THEN swing. They all leap out on their front foot much too early.
I see an over-dominant top hand. My youngest son suffers from the same flaw with the same result(rollover and pull off the ball). I like rdbass' suggestion on the oppo tee drill. Also, the top hand has to learn to work underneath the bottom. Her top hand is overpowering and overtaking her...
Agree 100%. She's not dragging/pulling the barrel. She IS turning it, she just needs to turn it at max effort NOW! NOW = swing launch. She currently is 'ramping up' to speed out front. She needs to try and achieve at/near 100% max batspeed at launch. Getting the barrel up to speed at launch will...
Interesting to see how different the greats of that era swings look from the greats of this era. Any thoughts on why? Lower strike zones? More downward movement on pitches? Natural evolution on the thoughts on what makes a great swing?
Frisbee drill should have the 'feel' of hand taking a straight line to the target. I know in reality, the path will be curvilinear, but that's what the hitter should feel to avoid what FFS is talking about above(hand/arm just rotating in a circular path with the body).
Hips open, and the hands flatten and turn the barrel rearward as the barrel finds plane. The rearward turning barrel provides resistance that lets the hips open and the shoulders remain closed. This is called the overlap.
I think this is somewhat the 'tail wagging the dog'. If you sequence correct early(hips begin opening as the hands are getting flat and the barrel is getting on plane) when the hands release the barrel directionally based on location of the pitch, the rear hip will follow naturally.
IMO, the...
Hips open before hands move forward, but hips don't open before hands activate or do anything. Hands are active from launch. They are flattening and getting the barrel on plane while hips are opening. This is what creates the overlap.
I don't want to teach dead hands at launch. I'm sure that's...
