Yup, I figured that out after I posted. They expanded seating last time we hosted, but it only got it up to 1,200.

I still can't imagine 3k tickets would generate enough revenue to make a difference in who hosts.

3,000 at $20 for the weekend that other schools have them fore sale at is $30,000. That's a big difference.

I do agree there should be a way to reward them for a good year even if they don't host. That may be the reason they are at Alabama for the regional since they are the lowest seed and struggled at the end of the year. They do get screwed if they head to the supers in Gainesville.

Kinda hard to really say because of overflow seating and temporary seats. U of Florida capacity is 1,200 but they have had 2,500 there for a UF v FSU game so I don't know that anyone can say for sure.

Actually 3,000 X $20 is $60,000 

The all-session pass is $30, plus what people would spend on merchandise, food etc. Minus whatever expenses to run a larger stadium. Let’s be generous and say it’s an additional $100k. What percentage does the NCAA get of that? It can’t be much, especially considering money they bring in from other sources. It’s significant to the schools, their programs to recruiting and to the conference. None of that should have a bearing on seeding, although it obviously does. SEC is more powerful than the B1G. Simple as that.

Trying trying to apply reason and fairness to any decision made by the NCAA is just plain silly. They are in it for themselves. Minnesota simply does not fit their narrative. Do you think for a minute if Michigan had the exact same schedule/record as Minnesota they would not be hosting? The NCAA and the game itself is no longer on the level. The NCAA protects and promote whoever is useful to them. Michigan and Hutch hosting is good show, Minnesota not so much. Barnhill, Carlson, and others although blatantly cheating is good show due to an ignorant viewer base. So IP's do not get called and as one announcer said "you don't ruin a good story". Getting in bed with ESPN has certainly helped promote the sport, but it is no longer about the game, it is now about the show.

From Baylor's website:

"Getterman Stadium features 430 chairback seats and 800 bleacher seats, most of which are covered."

230 more than MN. Apparently that's enough to trump the best record in the country.

Pretty sad when I can't even do basic math!

I could not find anything on softball but the minimum bid for a school to host a baseball regional in 2012 was $35,000. The super regional bid was $50,000. I did find that ticket sales are controlled by the NCAA but they are applied to the bid placed by the school. The school or host site keeps all concessions but the NCAA takes all merchandise revenue.

This may be a better explanation than anything. School sent in bids in April for this year. I guess the NCAA had an idea who the top 25 or so sites were and after the season wrapped up they could piece it together with the strength of the team. Maybe Alabama or Ole Miss threw out a $100,000 bid and Minnesota came in at $50,000.

I hope baseball is similar to other sports where bids are placed years in advance and not based on seeding. If high ranking teams can buy their seeding the system is more corrupt than I imagined.

On the plus side of this people are talking about softball on sports shows around the country and the Gophers are picking up hundreds of thousands of new fans. This is going to be far better for recruiting than hosting a regional.

The bids are placed the same year. I read an article on Cal's 2012 team and their attempt to host a regional. Once they realized it was a special year they wanted to host and get the home field advantage so they put a bid together. Even though they were the #1 team in the country they had to do a lot of work to host. They had to get temporary lights, temp press box, and additional seating.
