I think what happened instead is some athletes decided to take a gap year so they were still eligible for another year of play. I could be wrong though.
I have a client whose daughter played lacrosse at Columbia who got one year of playing. She played in 2018, blew her ACL in the spring of 2019, and had the 2020 season shortened and the 2021 season cancelled. No extra years for her.

Softball did the same thing. My friend's daughter played in 2019, 10 games in 2020, none in 2021, and a full year in 2022. They weren't even offered the option to play another year.

Even if they took a gap year where they took a year off from school?

ivy league choosing to do that is their doing. pretty sure all div of NCAA and NAIA were granted an additional year. Appearantly, it was optional for the schools to do it.

Neither took the gap year. They graduated on time. One took a gap year to go to PA school, but that was a requirement after graduation.

I don’t blame them. No way I’d take a gap year just to play one more year of ball. I get some people wanted that extra year and felt they missed out - but in the grand scheme of life I’d think I’d have to just move on and get started with the next chapter of my life. Just my opinion, of course.

Unless the school is going to pay for that Graduate degree.
