The 'push' that CY is describing occurs during the shift into heel plant ... during the uncoiling of the rear leg.

I understand, but like I said, I don't see any evidence of it. At the time of the shift into heel plant the rear knee is turning in and the thigh is pulling the lower leg. This causes the rear foot to come up heel first, then onto the toe. The evidence to support this is that the knee is bending, not straightening, and the rear foot is not flexing.

I think you may be confusing the pressure felt in the rear foot that the hips use for resistance to begin rotation, for a push. The problem with telling girls to push with the rear leg/foot is that if they do, they will push the entire body forward and end up with their weight 'over' the front leg instead of against it.

Oleary....leading with the back elbow is slotting....coach it out of them and see what happens...you keep referring to elbow leading the hands around the corner....big difference....that is bat drag no doubt....handle pulling.....when you apply pressure to the handle to turn/throw/whip the barrel the elbow will slot/lead since it is the open chain....restrict the elbow via active "connection" and you will pull off early due to shoulder dominated swing....or if you lead with the hips you have to over turn the shoulders to get the barrel around and pull off late....

Absolutely.

For some reason, around here lots of rec coaches tell FPS hitters to keep their back feet on the ground so that they can push off of their back foot. I'm not sure why they want the back foot on the ground or when to push -- and I'm pretty sure the girls don't either -- but the result is lots of excessively linear strides, lunging, and weight too far forward.

You're right. Semantics. It is a bad cue if you tell them to push. I've done that and it causes exactly what you describe (and they push UPWARDS.) The momentary push happens but it's a non-teach; it just happens.

There's a huge difference between leading with the back elbow and proper slotting.

This hitter's back elbow has overshot the slot position and leaked forward. That will push the pivot point too far forward and kill his swings.

Leading with the rear elbow as a cue would increase the chance of bat drag. When correcting bat drag one of the things I do is tell the player to keep the elbow behind the hands as they slot.

If you lead with the rear elbow you will most likely slice an outside low pitch. Referring to an earlier post.

Bold above ... does that agree with the Hanson Principle?

As Donny documented ... the solution to this is to 'coil' ... that is, 'coiling' enhances one's ability to 'uncoil' into heel-plant and in the process correct the lunging you are describing.
