The men crow hop and technically it is illegal under the proposed rule change. However I believe that it is illegal in the men's game but never called. Bill H can speak to that.
Well since there is video in mens games of crow hopping, replants, leapish with dragish, and easily hop to sides by 12 inches of the pitching rubber.....
Because sooo much is allowed
Anything goes in those games.
Myself have not seen an ump call any pitcher rules in mens games.

Perhaps now i commented that 🙂someone will post the '1' umpire who did call something regarding rules in mens game.
....but will need video proof 😁

Does that mean the optimal way to pitch will look something like the men's game?
Heres a reminder...
Woman used to pitch like that. Until multiple restrictions were implemented in the women's game.

Which is interesting because they imposed more restrictions in the women's game of pitching then they have men's game.
Of which we can see are loosening up again.

I guest umpired in a local Mens's fastpitch league this year. During pregame my partner said its the wild west and as long as they start on the rubber no illegal pitches are called. Leap, replant, crowhop whatever.......they end up throwing from about 35 feet......at least the games are low scoring...lol

Hhhaaahaaa wild west,
Can remember that in the womens game!
Yes it certainly was a shootout. With low scoring games and multiple Extra Innings.

Just to 'throw' this out there😄
* the women's game started from 40 feet and landed about 35 ft away. Yes we had pitchers that were throwing breaking 70 Mph.
We know they've already moved pitching back 3 ft to 43 ft.
Now I read the irony here on dfp somewhere someone commented
if they're going to let the pitchers leapish they need to move pitcher back 2 more feet.
People should know the history of the game so they can understand these ruling adjustments a little better.

Think the goal is probably to help balance out batting averages from being so extensive. Because the rules they made shifted the game possibly a little too much into the batter's hands.
* Possibly will leave that up to discussion...

Now I just thought of this if they put pitchers forward to 40 feet and let the rules stand the way they used to be....
People would probably go into shock of the dominance of pitchers.
Hmmm possibly with the yellow ball and the new bats they've been using...
heck might just be the best balance of everything! 🤔😎

To me, this is the rule change that changed softball more than any other!

Yep.

I think whatever we do, it has to be looked at through the lens of “how can we have more pitchers”. The lack of pitchers killed the men’s game. I don't know that rules changes affect the supply of pitchers but keep your eye on it.

Such a great point there Westwind!!!

Reflecting on the opposite side of that important requirement in *having good/effective pitchers
is that we know now in softball there are TONS of more teams now. If we want the ENTIRE competitive level of softball to grow
we need all of the positions *including pitchers to be able to play at upper levels.

Simply if everyone had a competitive pitcher everyone would be more competitive.

Over these decades I see the adjustments being made some of them were good and brought a lot more action with hits and runners. But I do see that there is a limited top-tier that should be larger. As far as competitive teams should be more than 5% at least 30 to 40% seems more applicable to a competitive sport. Or more what do people think on that? There could be a lot more teams putting pressure on trying to get to the College World Series.

Rad, your above post is exactly what I mean!

Its so important to the game that we figure out how to create more pitchers and keep them in the game, even if they will never be pitching for a P5 team. Somehow we have got to a point that if Tim Walton isn’t interested in you as a player, you are a failure of a player. And that’s not good.
