I am new to coaching, have a group of new 10u kids. We covered propper throwing at a few practices and I saw some kids make some dramatic improvements some of the time. Even the kids that pick it up quickly are still reverting to shot puting the ball sooner or later. I am torn because I don’t want them reinforcing doing it wrong, so I have been trying to correct quietly, privately. If anyone has any ideas other than just not being negative I would be interested to hear them? More time dedicated to throwing? Or correct whil edoing some other drill?

You have to be patient.

It takes weeks of work to change an ingrained motion. When they are 'just throwing' and not thinking about it, they will revert back to their old form until that change slowly happens. For some it will happen faster than others - younger ages are easier because they haven't been doing it as long as say 16U

That means they need to be throwing regularly 'right' - if they are just doing that in drill in practice, that is going to take longer than if they throw every day at home.

Specific response is
Up to a certain age parents really can help with this.
By re-enforcing training habits at home. Talk-understand-obsorb.
Like keeping up on homework from school.

as an old prof used to say, repetition is good for the soul. good reps, more good reps, then even more good reps.

You better get used to this. Why do you think Travel teams practice 3 days a week? Why do you think College players practice 5 days a week? And yet you expect kids who are just learning the game to have perfected the throwing motion because you told them how to do it at one practice. You work on throwing EVERY practice.

Funny you mention tattoos. At the rick pauly clinic we were at this winter, they drew on arms with sharpies. It worked great 😊

If this is something you have practiced before, and they should know it:

Stop the practice when you see someone do X wrong. Don't point out the person. (maybe do it a few minutes later so you disguise the person) Show them all how to do it. Make them all do it at the same time, until they all do it. Takes only a minute or two.

If they all aren't doing it based on a quick cue, then you need to spend more dedicated time as a group to this issue.

I never said I expected them to have it perfected after one practice, nor did I. (Even if that was not clear in my post) I just described what I saw and asked for some ideas to speed things along.
