Teach your daughter to smile and nod. She’s going to come across many more coaches who want her to do things their way even though she thinks her way is better.
Telling a coach you don’t like their drill even if the drill is stupid isn’t going to win her any prizes with the coach.

High school softball is terrible around here. I can't even imagine what middle school ball would look like. In general, I would say grin and bear it and get through the season.

I can totally commiserate. DD's MS coach was actually a soccer coach and he had the girls doing crazy things like backhand balls that a shuffle could easily put them behind and didn't want to hear anything but his own opinion. I told DD to be respectful but as soon as he wasn't looking to do what her (excellent) TB coaches taught her and blame muscle memory if he said anything. Also told her the season is only 2 months and she'd never see him again as the following year she was eligible to try out for the HS team.

What position? Because if she's playing third, the backhand is probably better than shuffling into foul territory to field it.

I'm sure there's more than what you described, but simply teaching (and preferring) a backhand doesn't sound so crazy.

Edit: To the OP, if the drill she was being taught was working counter to what she's being taught elsewhere, and she KNOWS that, I don't see how it can mess up her swing. She can do the drill, smile and nod, and just not incorporate that into her swing. It's only going to mess up the swing of someone who doesn't know better.

I'll bet that when games start and the coach sees how well these girls play, and play together, the suggestions for change will stop, or greatly reduce.

In the meantime, no harm in trying new things, even if most suggestions don't work out. Take what works, leave behind what doesn't.

And be sure to thank the coach for coaching. HS and esp MS coaches are saints!

What do you really know about the situation? What has been presented is one side of the conversation. In fact, the coach might have gone into great detail about why hitters do the drill and then said that all hitters do this drill. Also, you don't know any other part of the conversation per what was communicated accurately or at all. Finally, if this is true, then the coach doesn't need to be "tolerated" at all. I am constantly amazed that people will complain about such poor coaching and then tell their child to go play for the coach. REMOVE THE PLAYER FROM THE TEAM!
i commented to the detail in op's post.
And specifically added my detail to what i was commenting on.
Which was very clear.

No kidding
There is usually more stuff to stories.;):ROFLMAO:

I could write a book here on MS and HS coaches, but I won't!

I can hear it on my tv screen right now as the next ESPN 30 for 30 is starting:

"What if I told you there was a man who had so many stories about middle school and high school softball coaches that he could write a best selling book? This is the story of a man that has decided to put that fame and fortune aside because he dreams of being an award winning author on the intricacies of creating what could never be disputed as THE perfect glove."

I work with my dd every fielding practice doing backhand drills. Yes she could easily get in front of them but the point is to learn how to backhand a ball correctly when needed. In my experience most shots down 3rd don't give you enough time to square them up, they just have to react.

That sounds more like an intro to an old Twilight Zone episode.

... and I commented that you don't really know the whole story. Imagine, if you will, a 13-year-old who has become so advanced at playing TB at the B level that she feels empowered enough to tell the MS coach that this coach's drills suck. Imagine as well that this might be a drill that the young hitter is struggling with and so would not opt to understand the drill might expose the hitter's flaws but instead the young player decides instead to blame the coach. In this setting, I can't imagine that this young player would then take this to all aspects of the game where the player believes that they know more than the coach. Imagine, if you will, that the player's parent knows this coach's resume to the point that the parent knows that his 13 year old knows more than the coach. Finally, imagine, if you will, any parent wanting their child to play for such a pathetic coach. Why not instead be the parent and remove the child if you think that this coach is so inept. Imagine if you will, a parent sitting in the stands telling anyone who will listen just how inept the coach is ... but I digress. DON'T "TOLERATE" THE COACH. REMOVE YOUR DD FROM THE TEAM.
