So Julray says LISTEN to the best in the game. Ummmmm...listen to Trout describe and demo his approach!
The point is the clip adds to the discussion in that the game's top player reinforces what you have been saying in this thread. So it gives everyone something to consider as part of the discussion.
I have been repeating what the best in the game say. Not just Trout, Yelich, Pujois, Cruz etc. They all talk about what their hands do, "down to". There are exceptions .. not many, very few.
With that being said, I have no problem with with JD's approach on a high pitch. He's talking about a pitch up at the shoulders.. how "down to" can a hitter be with a pitch that high. Also "swing down(reference to resulting barrel path)" and being "down to(hands in isolation)" is not the same thing. Check the gifs below, I see JD being down to (hands, just like Trout's demo);

and here's a high pitch, hands still going directly to the ball
Hands being pulled down to the ball, as the hands get pulled around the rear shoulder, barrel arcs rearward
Wouldn't read too much into it to be honest because they are not all game swings. Not sure what JD was working on at the time. Just illustrating the JD does a "down to/ direct to" approach with his hands as well... game and practiceWhat do you see as the fundamental difference between these two swings? Not pitch height but mechanics? I am assuming they are both Donaldson, newer and older versions?
