First we rake an area of the infield at SS and 2B. We set up two cones and have two buckets of balls and two feeders. We have the fielder step forward as if to field the ball. We work on drop steps and so, naturally, the first move either left or right has to start with a drop step. When the fielder catches the ball, the have to run the ball to the ball basket and then run to the other line. As we advance in this drill, we roll the balls further outside the cones which necessitates a dive. This can get real competitive if you award points. Losers runs to center field fence and back. Yesterday, it was obvious which players were adapt at diving and which had never dove for a ball.
