UCLA has very little to lose by verballing a STUD player early. If she pans out they get a great player, if she doesn't they pull her offer for some "undisclosed" reason. There is no penalty for the school other than the possibility of some bad publicity, but most decommitments happen with very little fanfare - the player and the school are both a little embarrassed by the situation, so no one talks about it.

A 2019 player got an offer at a D-I camp last weekend that DD attended. Was not a pitcher.

So, why is this a bad thing?

Not saying it is, or isn't. Haven't thought about it enough to form an opinion.

And if it is bad, how do you stop it? You would have to limit contact because as long as coaches and their representatives can talk, they will get around the rule. If you outlaw offers and commitments, then it becomes, "I know I can't offer you anything, but just know that if you want to come here, the chances of me sending you the paperwork in November of your senior year is very, very, very high if you know what I mean.''

In football this is know as a "silent commit".....and it happens more than most people realize, although it usually still happens in the junior or senior year.

Camp I was at last week the coaches talked about the changes coming to help stop the 8th and 9th grade verbals. Most coaches are for the changes but why stop verbaling 13 year olds if your rivals aren't stopping? You have to do it to stay competitive until there are rules put in place.

Here is an article about a girl who had her offer pulled by Kentucky.
Academics is often given as the reason in cases like this. The player is responsible for that, however I wonder how often the coach could have gotten them admitted and chose not to do it.

Hmm, another SEC school decommitting players and the frequent "verbals are meaningless" posters are from Florida...

With conferences adopting guaranteed 4-year scholarships for all players, I wonder if some coaches are renegotiating verbal offers they don't want to guarantee for 4 years.

How does a 4-year partial scholarship work vs. a 4-year full ride? I know of a couple of players who received offers that increased over time - say 50% for the first two years, 75% as a junior and 100% as a senior.
