There are people who know how to read who understand the purpose of this website.

And the people who know how to read are capable of recognizing that this topic - as presented - falls outside DFP guidelines. There are a few pretty good reasons for disallowing political discussions here.

Political? Do you not think there are any safety issues to be concerned with? As presented, it was the news article that was copy and pasted. It mentioned many reasons including safety and unfair advantage. So exactly how does that fall outside the guidelines?

It doesn't, I agree. However, you cannot discuss this issue without addressing the underlying moral assumptions being made by the State of California. That is a giant can of worms that may be better left off of this website. Especially given that those who make and support such laws under the guise of "tolerance" are often the most viciously intolerant of those who dissent from their views. I'm bowing out of this one.

If you were this person, what would you do? You believe that you're a girl stuck in a boys body. You want to be a girl. You're already dressing and acting like a girl. Wouldn't you want to play on a girls team? Or would you still want to play on the baseball team with boys? Wouldn't that - having a baseball player who identifies as a girl - have the same potential to draw the media or fan harassment and extra security that you spoke about? Or would you try to act and dress like a boy and play baseball and deny who you believe yourself to be? Or would you decide that because people can't accept you that it's better not to play sports at all?

I understand the concerns that people have. Not trying to debate whether this is right or wrong. But since someone did ask, I will say that if there were a transgender player in the other dugout of my daughter's high school or travel games, I would have no problem with it. Not saying it would be wrong to object on certain grounds, but I would be fine with it. I would be surprised if my daughter didn't feel the same.

I get what you are saying. But it is not his right to be accepted. It is not his right to play softball because he states he is a female on the inside. And maybe playing baseball would draw the same attention but he is STILL a boy. If being a boy that is claiming to be a girl draws attention then so be it. This goes back to making a choice that will effect every aspect of his life. He knew there would be situations that could come up just like this one. If he didn't then his parents didn't do a very good job helping him with his decision. What happens if in a year he decides "oh it was a phase I was going thru, I'm a guy again". We are talking about a 17 yr old kid. I understand they issues that confuse them and maybe they are not sure what they are in life. But at the same time they have realize that every decision they make will effect their future. 17 probably isn't a mature enough age to make such a huge decision. If your HS dd told you she was in love with a 56 yr old man would you be okay with that? She may believe in her heart she is and she may think that the only way to be happy is to marry him. But do you honestly believe she knows what she wants in life or would you think it was a phase she was going thru??

You say you have no problem with it, well you may not but you are not in the situation to have deal with it. He looks to be of average size, not a giant by no means. But what if he was a 6'4 210 kid that was very strong and athletic and in the same situation? What would your response be then. What if your dd was the catcher and he mowed her over and did permanent damage? How would you handle that? The fact there is nothing about him that is female except for the way he portrays himself.

Yet we are suppose to still have "free speech." Is there no longer any value to that?

We now live in a world where some people look to be insulted just to be able to spout off that they have been insulted.

Exactly! AND being insulted or "offended" is a choice the person makes. It seems like today, free speech is only ok if it doesn't offend someone. It needs to be quashed if your free speech shows a different opinion than someone elses. So much for FREE speech.

Where is this right listed? So many people have thrown the right to this or right to that out there. In reality, you have very few rights. No one girl or boy has a right to play softball. Geez.

This topic has everything to do with softball. It is a story about a boy being allowed to play girls softball.

Sorry in advance for the response to multiple posts without quotes.

"It ain't a problem until there's a problem". Its going to blow over with all the circus attention until this kid cranks a dozen out of the park... then we'll see how understanding their opponents are within the conference.

Agree with James. Strength is a huge issue here. He played baseball, so the know how is there. The little softball fields could become even smaller for this kid. A complete mishit could be a homer.
I think if he comes out and hits .100 and does nothing special...this will be forgotten. But watch out if the complete opposite happens and the uproar begins.

IMHO, (please note that I'm not only one person with a "delete thread option") the topic is OK.

Please stick to the topic. Seems we have people chomping at the bit to discuss generally the intolerance of liberals/conservatives.
