I'd be ok with a Sept 1 date but the June falls in the middle of the travel season. I do like the odd year designations, 11, 13, 15 as my daughter doesn't have middle school ball and sits around waiting for the 9th graders to finish so her TB team can get started.

If a team is playing within the age group of that team how is this "playing down"? As far as I am concerned, as long as the coach, parents and players are happy, why should we care? If you want to play up go for it.

IMO the softball season starts in the fall. So if your team ages out on Jan 1st and you have to move up to the next age bracket. IMO you are doing the kids a disservice by hanging around in the fall and playing and playing younger teams! I deffinately don't look at it as "playing up" for the teams that are actually going to be playing spring season in that age class. But I do look at it as playing down if your team ages out Jan 1st.

I don't know if I'm in favor, but I have always had DD playin up. I have enjoyed people always asking...How old is she??? Well this will be the first year that she won't... At the 10u games, she is one of the biggest, instead of the smallest... Not liking saying she is 11 in a 10U classification. It just sounds like she flunked a grade or something. Plans are when moving up to 12U, not being sidetracked into 11U myth. Then my hopes is that she'll be on track to move up to 14U the next year, and back in sync with being the "U" that is made available for all ages.

I took her to a 12U tryout this year, even though she was on the 10U just to get experience for the big transition for next year, and had lotz of conflict getting her on the 12U tryout diamond, and not the 11u... They kept referring to what grade she was in... I finally just had to say.. "she is a U...she is not 12, are you going to let us tryout were I want her to or not ??" I never got a call back from that team. Can't wait to blister the org.s 10U team this month. And I'm going to see to it that they get the chance to play against her the rest of her life. I'm wanting that former college coach to join the ranks of MJ (Jordans) first coach... lol

ASA used to be Sept 1st, but the "softball community" thought it was better to stick with the calendar year and moved it to Jan 1st. After a year, it was changed to Dec 31st as the age eligibility for that player the following year.

The Sept 1st date pretty much handled the perceived problem with college players and has been discussed as another change, but hard heads prevailed and it was dismissed.

1) NO - if anything the date should be changed to match the school cut off (Sept 1 in GA) to try and keep girls in the same grade grouped together. My DD used to play AAU basketball and they would give her a grade exemption (DD has an October birthday) to play 'down' with the girls in her grade.

2) NO - if softball ever grew to the number of teams/girls playing as baseball then it is a possibility, but until that happens it would not work. When we select players for my DD team, we give preference to players with the same birth year. This allows the team to stay together every season. I also think our girls improve by playing teams that are older/better than they are.

That is what they tried to do around her.... DD (10U) has friends who's parents have leveraged their way into JV coaching positions already, with the hopes of keeping them together, and having MS & HS team.... but I don't subscribe to that. Since we agree on best improvement is made against older better girls, then I'm sure you will agree that, playing a girl "U"=up is OK too. I think where the line can be drawn is the word competition...I'm sure you can say that you want every girl to compete against the best available. But I see the competition is for the a position, in practice, that should be made available to all girls on the team, the whole year.

DD never had any problems with preferences, from the beginning, but this comes into play when getting close to MS. I have plans to move her to where I went to school, and she play with her cousins her Jr. Senior year, and really have a shot at State.

I have no problem with a girl 'playing up' an age bracket if she is able to hold her own. Playing time is critical for improvement and mound time for a pitcher is even more important. I am always amazed at parents who will put their DD on a team because the team is very good, even though their DD will only play 20-25% of the time......

Agree to that also....except nationals as a pick-up player. DD is pitcher/catcher/SS... has never had a problem with playing time. But in all honesty, I like practices, and Tryouts much better than games... Might be just that there are 5x as many because we compete yr round... :{))
