My daughter is on a new travel ball team. She was originally taught a bullet spin fastball. We switched pitching coaches who doesn't believe in bullet spin fastball or fastball at all. He teaches a peel drop. So for last 10 months, my daugher has not thrown a fastball and I really do not want her to go back to that bullet spin because it took awhile to break that habit in order to throw the peel drop. Anyways, my daughter's travel ball coach said her drop ball is definitely her go to pitch but wants her to have a fastball. She is 12u and throws a drop, change, and has been working on a cruve for the past 3 months. Has anyone else experienced a coach who wants a fastball and how did you handle it? She has a pitching lesson this weekend so I'll talk to her pc then, too. For now, I just told her to throw her drop at the knees when he calls a fastball.

Depends on a few factors. How fast is she compared to other pitchers her age? If you're a good 10-15% faster it "can" be a good tool.

Also depends on what he wants the FB for. A go to pitch, not really. But a FB can be a good "set up" pitch for a pitchers movement sequences.

Can also be a chase pitch when you're ahead in the count. Outside the zone.

Depends on the speed of your FB and speed of your breaking pitches. Say your breaking balls are around 55ish, and you can hurl the FB 60. Then you've got a "mixed" speed pitch.

There is no pitch on earth that has had more K's than a fastball in the diamond game. But you have to know when to use it, how to use it, the speed to use it, and the knowledge of when to not use it.

A peel drop should have the same spin as the fastball, it is just released earlier then the fastball.

Is the fastball "FAST"?
If you can throw it 6-10% faster than your main repetoire, then it can be effective as what I call an "upspeed" change.

"How fast is the peel drop?"

She is 11 and her peel drop is 45mph. I am assuming he wants her to get a fastball thinking it will be a couple mph faster. How much faster is a fastball than a peel drop usually?

Quoted from PitchSoftball Home Page Great softball pitching hints and recommendations for girl softball pitchers

John Gay, the nationally respected pitching coach in Vancouver, Washington says : “Don't fall into the trap of thinking you can have a turn over drop that will be your fastest pitch. The fastest ball you can throw is a drop and the fastest drop you can throw, and one that has the greatest spin, is the peel drop. Just by the nature of the pitch, turning the hand over the top of the ball will slow the ball down.”

From experience, I know this to be a true statement.

Coach-n-Dad...you should look at the various discussions we've had regarding the turnover and the peel drop.

The "hand going over the top of the ball" is a way to help the pitcher understand the movement of the hand. In fact, the hand does *NOT* go over the top of a ball when the turnover is thrown. My DD threw a great turnover drop, and her hand doesn't go over the top of the ball. I previously posted the shots of her hand at release. I was surprised by the results.
