I am a TB coach but work at a high school. I take my daughter, a 12u TB player, to many of both the varsity and JV games at that school. Our varsity coach is pretty good but the JV coach doesn't really know what she is doing. Most of the JV and varsity girls play lower level TB or rec ball but 2 of the girls have D-1 schollies for next year. I find game management of both coaches to be lacking especially at the JV level. Most schools in our area have a policy that they must give first crack at coaching positions to teachers, even if they have never coached before. A lot of coaches were baseball players and therefore must be good at coaching softball (note sarcasm). I see glaring deficiencies in game management all the time and I enjoy discussing the "what should they have done" with my daughter at the games.
My dd tb team is pretty good and almost all of our girls see hitting/pitching coaches on the side, their parents spend a ton of money. I rarely ever give advice or try to change anything in their swing or pitching unless it is a glaring flaw. If I do see something that is wrong I approach the parent first and ask if it is something their hitting or pitching coach is teaching them and give my 2 cents to take to their instructor. I feel that this is a good practice for all coaches and I would be very upset if my daughter's school ball coach tried to change her swing without discussing it with me first.
