Never really understood why people would want their DD to go back to REC after experiencing TB....

Older DD injured her pitching shoulder in the Fall one year playing travel. 3 months of no shoulder activity followed by 3 months of physical therapy finally got her to the point of being able to throw once a week for 15-20 minutes. This was in mid-February of her 8th grade year, and it was evident she wasn't going to be 100% anytime soon. She and I outlined a slow and steady progression to hopefully have her near 100% by the time HS ball started up the following year. Step 1 in that recovery process was to return to rec ball for the Spring season so she could work on building her strength and stamina without having to get overworked (which was part of her injury). Or, what most likely would have happened, she wouldn't have pitched much since she had neither the strength nor the stamina to pitch multiple games in successive days against elite batters. In rec, she was able to pitch once every 2 days or so, and thus have time to recuperate in between games, which was extremely important to her recovery. She's a sophomore in HS now, has been the varsity starting pitcher since she arrived and is stronger than ever (17 complete games this year).

OK, REC is good for a rehab assignment....

The biggest reason I have seen for returning to rec is about time commitment conflicts with other things that are a priority in their lives. I have also seen a couple of players that realized that they were simply out of their depth at that level of competition.

Rec All-Star tourneys in our area often have rules that there are no TB players allowed or a max of 1 or 2. Our in house association will not accept any TB players for all-stars. Every other team around ignores this rule, and we usually wind up playing in tournaments that permit B travel teams as well. Our association president is the league president as well so we have to "set an example". After getting clobbered last year in these tournaments, we decided to move into TB this season (second year 12U).

DD is still playing rec this year but just to be with her friends.

One local association has enough girls for 2 teams in our rec league. That assoc has won every year we've been involved. Their 2 teams played each other the first game of the year. 24-0, 4 inning run rule win for team 1 over team 2. So much for the draft. Team 1 is basically their all star team and team 2 has daisy pickers. It's not surprising they take home the league plastic every season is it?
