Baseball lost a great person, true professional, student of the game and one of the best hitters ever.
As a Phillies fan, I dreaded seeing this guy come up in a meaningful situation. Guy could flat out hit. Not the roided up freak or gym rat like some, but one heck of a pro hitter.
And you know what, the way he carried himself and spoke, I rooted for him to succeed every time.
Always love to watch this guy hit. Just a beautiful swing. Only struck out 434 times in over 10K PA's. Many seasons under 20K's. I remember the ESPN discussions with Tony and Ted Williams. You could see the respect they had for each other. Always played like he was playing a game and enjoying it.
I hope some good comes out of this. I still see far to many ball players with a can of chewing tobacco in their pocket, and a wad stuck between their lip and gums.
