Taking Bats on Airplanes

Do the airlines/TSA allow you to take softball bats on an airplane as carryon luggage, or do you need to check it? I would guess it would be considered a weapon and not allowed as carryon, but I've never actually flown with one so I don't know.

I had to check it in Australia back in the late 90s. I can't imagine them allowing it on board.

Bats are a no-no, but tennis racquets are permitted.
