^^^ agree

Babe 6'2 weight listed from 215-254, swung like a 40ish ounce bat. ( 44 ounce some say )

Ichiro 5'10 170. ( prob a 31 ounce )

Sure, size matters to some degree, but that's not the reason Ichiro doesn't hit like Ruth.

Ichiro is 5' 11" 170 - Willie Mays was 5' 11" 180 and he hit 660 HR's. About 35 per year to Ichiro's 8.

Dustin Pedroia is 5' 8" 165 and hits almost twice as many HR per year, as Ichiro.

The difference is in the bio-mechanics.

How many 170lb players are averaging 34 dingers a year over their career....let's be just a little serious, huh? Let's tell the 5-1, 91lb 2nd basemen that she should be swinging for the fences instead of focusing on line drives and getting on base....

Willie Mays was one. There are others. And, it isn't about swinging for the fences; it's about being able to hit the ball hard.

You've totally missed the point of the post; which was to determine the bio-mechanical differences between the two swings, and why one will hit the ball hard, and the other won't.

In your face
Bonds 6'1 220
Aaron 6' 185
Ruth 6'2 215ish
Mays 5'10 170
A-rod 6'3 225
Griffey 6'3 195
Thome 6'4 250
Sosa 6' 170
Robinson 6'1 185
McGwire 6'5 215

Top 10, and 2 in the 170 range. Now the interesting part would be proving how they make up for the size handicap. :)

Maybe you could dig up the amount of 170lb guys that didn't make it to the big leagues because their OBP sucked....

The test...The test is has to be a trick question or fishing for "enemies". Because anyone that talks to mlb players as much as they say they do knows that Ichiro is famous for his batting practice long ball show he puts on for the fans. To use a <170 lb hitter that is well know for being able to drop bombs, but better serves his team as a high average contact hitter, to compare with Babe who pushed 250 for several years is either practicing foolery or really didn't think this one through.

I read the question in the car, got home and looked and TM already had an answer...so credit goes...

Three do the same ^^^^^^^ One does not VVVVVVVVV

Three of them TURN THEIR BARREL TO FLATTEN IT.....as they PIVOT around the rear leg, from a WEIGHTED rear leg, AS they move forward. They use rearside resistance.....resistance BEHIND the rear hip/leg....to load with/against.

One does not. As he slides forward and shifts into the lead leg, he tips the barrel the wrong way.....HE REMOVES ANY RESISTANCE IT COULD OFFER....before any pivot occurs. In fact....that is why no pivot occurs.

The kid is coiling CLOSED as he moves out. The other three are turning OPEN as they move out.

The three....their hand pivot is pivoting WITH....yet AGAINST....the rear hip pivot....simultaneous. Rear hip is pivoting forward AS the hands are pivoting the barrel rearward. This is a CRITICAL loading technique.

The kid has no pivot in either his hands nor his hip.

Please stay on the topic. Which is; what bio-mechanical differences are there between Ruth and Suzuki and why do Ruth's mechanics (not his size) create more bat acceleration and contact velocity, than the mechanics used by Suzuki. Size is irrelevant here. Assume they are both exactly the same size. One moves in a way that creates more power than the other.

Geez, several of you are TOTALLY missing the point. I chose the two videos because they both exhibit a narrow stance followed by a wide contact position. They visually look similar. I wanted to see if people could see why one swing hits the ball hard and the other doesn't in what appear to be very similar movements.

The post wasn't meant to compare their historical stats, their approach to hitting, their size differences, or that Suzuki can hit HR's in BP.

This is an example of why I get frustrated posting here and other places. People can't focus on the point being made. The point is; subtle bio-mechanical differences. Can you identify them? A couple of posters hit the nail on the head. I'll name them later.
